3D Visualization and Prototyping (3DVP) Lab at Grant Street Studios

The 3DVP lab supports interdisciplinary research in 3D visualization and prototyping at Arizona State University. We provide cutting edge expertise in a variety of integrated technologies including 3D data capture through desktop laser and LIDAR scanning, photogrammetry, and structured light technologies; modeling and visualization using 3D CAD, animation, and reverse engineering applications; and prototyping and fabrication using computer controlled fabrication and 3D printing. We are also committed to serving the local community through consulting, education and training, and community outreach.

Interdisciplinary Research
Current projects include collaborations with resident artists at the ASU Art Museum, Forensic experts at ASU West, BioEngineering at ASU and the Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and (Algae Project) ASU East. Past projects have included major research initiatives with the Archaeological Research Institute and the Keck Imaging Lab at ASU.

Professional consulting
Our team is available for professional consulting and design development. Much of our scanning equipment is portable, so we can provide services on site using a variety of 3D capture technologies including stereogrammetry, LIDAR, and structured light.

Education and Training
While these technologies were once reserved for highly trained specialists, many aspects of the lab are accessible to novice users and students. We have conducted numerous workshops for individuals and groups of all levels and backgrounds, including professional sculptors, bioengineers, industrial designers, archaeologists, and many others—a recent highlight being a multi-day workshop for middle school students in Scottsdale conducted by Andrew Noble.

Community outreach
Our partners across the Valley include the Tempe Center for the Arts, the Shemer Art Center, the Tempe History Museum, and the Pueblo Grande Museum. Recent exhibitions at the Tempe Center for the Arts and the Shemer Art Center featured exhibitions of 3D printed objects and hands-on demonstrations and training in 3D scanning and printing.
